Project: Lake Tota

Lake Tota, a natural resource and World Heritage site, faces a growing threat due to agricultural and livestock overexploitation, wastewater discharge, indiscriminate fishing, and the absence of drastic measures by environmental authorities. The root of the problem lies in the economic dependence of farmers on agricultural and livestock activities, which, though profitable, are causing clear ecosystem degradation. From our company CES Environmental Solutions, we aim to develop this project with environmental and social impact, significantly reducing negative impacts on the Lake Tota ecosystem and promoting actions for its restoration and conservation.

Diagnosis:
Despite legal actions for its protection and recognition as a subject of rights, being one of the most important natural resources in Colombia, according to environmental authorities, pollution remains at levels considered acceptable, and therefore, it is not receiving the necessary protection. Regional economic interests resist change, even when the serious environmental impact is acknowledged. The proposal is to implement nature-based solutions, involving communities to take on the protection of their natural resources, raising awareness about their vital care and the need for recognition as subjects of rights.

Objective
The main objective is to engage the surrounding community of Lake Tota, covering approximately 2000 hectares and more than 100 families. We aim for these communities to abandon harmful agricultural practices for environmental restoration, conservation, ecotourism, and sustainable agriculture.

Methodology
Formation of Alliances: Collaborate with local leaders and farmers to develop a joint project.
Integration of International Governmental and Non-Governmental Organizations: Bring in international organizations to support the project and secure funding.
Sensitization and Environmental Education: Raise awareness about the importance of lake protection and the benefits of nature-based solutions.
Design of Pilot Projects: Identify critical areas and develop pilot projects for restoration and conservation.\n
Implementation of Nature-Based Solutions

Payments for Environmental Services: Compensate participants for their efforts in ecosystem protection.
Carbon Credits: Generate additional income for biodiversity protection.
Payments for Conservation: Incentivize sustainable practices and natural environment preservation.
Ecotourism Development: Promote sustainable tourism activities benefiting the community.\n
Benefits and Compensation
Economic Income: Estimated that proposed solutions can generate an average income of $500 per hectare per year.
Risk Minimization: Adoption of these solutions involves minimal risk compared to traditional agricultural and livestock activities.
Environmental Improvement: Contribute to ecosystem restoration and pollution reduction.\n
Monitoring and Evaluation
Establish a monitoring system to assess project effectiveness and make adjustments as necessary. Include environmental, social, and economic indicators to measure global impact.

Conclusion
This project aims not only for Lake Tota\’s preservation but also to empower communities to become active guardians of their environment and to advocate for legal actions for its recovery and conservation. By integrating nature-based solutions, we hope to achieve a sustainable balance between economic development and environmental conservation.
